Su primer presidente fue James Leon Wi- lliams, que fue seguido por otros 86, to- dos de países desarrollados y la mayoría de Estados Unidos, que es donde reside la mayoría de sus miembros. Yo voy a ser la 87 presidente y la primera procedente de un país en desarrollo. Estoy muy conten- ta con esta distinción, pero consciente de la enorme responsabilidad que tengo. Mi lema como presidente de IADR es: «Re- ducir las desigualdades y mejorar la cali- dad de la investigación dental en todo el mundo.» Antes de mi nombramiento había trabajado en diferentes áreas de la asocia- ción. Fui presidenta de la División Brasile- ña en 1994-95, vocal de la junta directiva de 1995-98, participé como miembro del Comité de Miembros y presidí el Programa de Desarrollo Regional. En esas actividades aprendí sobre la asociación y me relacioné con colegas de todo el mundo. Creo que esta experiencia, junto con el hecho de que no hay candidatos americanos, así como la perspectiva del congreso de IADR 2012 en Río de Janeiro, han sido decisivos para mi elección. ¿A qué se debe el número récord de re- súmenes en el congreso de Barcelona? En primer lugar a que el Prof. David Wi- lliams instó a todos los miembros de IADR a desafiar a la crisis económica y participar en las reuniones de IADR. Además, el pro- grama preparado por los Grupos Científi- cos y el Comité Organizador motivó a los miembros. El congreso está precedido por un simposio un día sobre el tema “Desigual- dades globales en la salud oral: la agenda de investigación”. La 88ª Sesión General de la IADR y la 5ª Sesión General de la Región Europea de IADR tendrán lugar del 14 al 17 de julio, con la siguiente programación: 32 simposios de temas específicos, 5 Talle- res, 29 reunines Almuerce y Aprenda, 20 presentaciones principales, sesiones ora- les, sesiones de carteles con más de 5.000 obras seleccionadas, además de tres dis- tinguidos científicos: Francisco Fernández Avilés, Thomas Lehner y el Premio Nobel Harald zur Hausen. Barcelona es la segunda ciudad más vi- sitada Europa y por lo tanto también un importante atractivo. Por último, algunos colegas han manifestado que irán al con- greso principalmente para honrarme en la sesión de apertura, donde daré el discurso presidencial. De hecho, Brasil ha sido el país que ha presentadop el mayor número de resúmenes en este congreso. ¿Qué resúmenes le parecen los más in- teresantes? Se han presentado más de 5.500 resúmenes sobre diversas áreas de la odontología, des- de investigación básica a aplicada. Fueron analizados y seleccionados por los Grupos Científicos y Redes de IADR, que realiza- ron un trabajo exhaustivo. Las obras selec- cionadas tratan sobre los últimos avances en biología molecular básica, ingeniería ti- sular, aplicación de materiales bioactivos, materiales con propiedades restaurativas más adecuadas para la cavidad oral, estu- dios clínicos controlados aleatorios sobre diferentes enfermedades, el uso de dife- rentes técnicas de restauración e incluso la influencia que pueden ejercer sobre los determinantes sociales de la inequidad en la salud de la población. Los estudios odon- tología no se limitarán a la cavidad bucal, sino que serán parte de la salud general del paciente. Los participantes interactúan con los dictantes, de manera que todos los resúmenes presentados despiertan mucho interés. ¿Cuál es la función principal de la IADR? Promover, a través de investigación, la me- jora de las condiciones de salud bucal de la población en todo el mundo. The International Association for Dental Re- search (IADR) was established in December 1920 by a group of 25 scientists under the leadership of a biochemist, William J. Gies. Its first president was James Leon Williams. He was followed by 86 presidents, all from de- veloped countries, most of them from United States, which is where more than half of its memberscomefrom.I’llbethe87thpresident and the first from a developing country. I am very happy with this distinction, but aware of the enormous responsibility I have to pre- side over this international association and to represent all of its members. My motto as IADR President is “Reducing Disparities and Improving the Quality of Dental Research Worldwide.” Before being appointed as president of IADR, I had worked in different areas of the association. I was president of the Brazilian Division in 1994-95, Member-at-Large of the Board in 1995-98, part of the Membership & Recruitment Committee, and Chair of the Re- gional Development Program. In these diverse activities I got to know the as- sociationandrelatetocolleaguesfromaround the world. I believe this experience, coupled with the fact that there was no American can- didate in the race, and also the prospects of the 2012 IADR General Session in Rio de Ja- neiro, were instrumental in my election. What’s the reason for the record number of abstracts submitted to the Barcelona congress? First, (current IADR President) by Prof. David Williams, who urged all IADR members to face the challenges of the global financial cri- sis and actively participate in IADR meetings. Also, to the great program put together by IADR’s Scientific Groups and Network Offi- cers, and by the Organizing Committee, which certainly motivated members to submit wor- ks. The General Session is preceded on July 13th by a full-day symposium on the topic “Global Oral Health Inequalities: the Research Agenda.” Then on July 14 - 17, the 88th Gene- ral Session of IADR and the 5th General Ses- sion of the Pan European Region of IADR will present the following program: 32 symposia with specific topics, 5 Workshops, 29 Lunch & Learning presentations, 20 keynote presen- tations, oral presentations, poster sessions with more than 5,000 works selected, and also three distinguished scientists, Francisco Fernandes-Aviles, Thomas Lehner and Nobel Prize winner Harald zur Hausen. Also, the city of Barcelona is the second most visited city in Europe, and therefore also an important attraction. Finally, some colleagues have expressed that will make it to the Opening Session to honor me, which is when I’ll give the President’s speech. In fact, Brazil is the country that has submitted the largest number of abstracts for this congress. What abstracts are the most interesting? Over 5,500 abstracts have been submitted covering all areas of dentistry, from basic research to applied research. They were re- viewed and selected by the Scientific Groups and Network Officers of IADR, which conduc- ted a thorough and important work for our as- sociation. The selected papers address recent advances in basic studies of molecular biolo- gy, tissue engineering, bioactive materials, restorative materials with suitable properties for use in the oral cavity, event clinical, ran- domized controlled studies on different disea- ses, the performance of different restorative techniques, and the influence of social deter- minants on health disparities in the world’s population. Studies in the field of dentistry are no longer restricted to the oral cavity, but are being inte- grated in patient’s general health. In addition, participants interact with presenters so that all abstracts submitted arise much interest. What is the main mission of IADR? To improve, through research, the oral health status of the population worldwide. This has been achieved, but there are still many dis- parities in different countries and even wi- thin countries, and these disparities will be highlighted at the symposium on June 13th entitled “Global Oral Health Inequalities: the Research Agenda.” Subsequently we intend to develop actions, together with partner orga- nizationsandgovernments,soevidence-based research is implemented and improves the oral health of people around the world. What are the highlights of the General Session in Barcelona? Besides the great scientific program, the pre- sentationsofabstracts,andtheoralandposter presentations that will occur throughout the congress. In addition, there are also working meetings of scientific groups and social gathe- rings.Throughouttheevent,participantshave the opportunity to discuss the results of their research with colleagues, and partnerships to plan and implement joint projects.
